I’m a sports journalist with special interests in the business of sports, sports and law and sports for children.
Lately, it’s been mostly kids and sports. In April 2009, Beacon Press published my book about the troubled state of youth sports, Until It Hurts. (The paperback came out in March 2010). Now I’m working on a book considering the business of youth sports. I've also written articles for the New York Times and Sports Illustrated.
I’ve worked for five newspapers, including The Sun in Baltimore. I’ve also been a contributing editor at BusinessWeek and a contributing columnist for the Sports Business Journal.
Other random highlights:
- In 1998, I assisted Baseball Hall of Fame broadcaster Jon Miller in the writing of his memoir, Confessions of a Baseball Pursuit: What’s Right – and Wrong – With Baseball As Seen from the Best Seat in the House.
- In March 2010, I was honored as one of 18 Sports Ethics Fellows by the Institute for International Sport at the University of Rhode Island and the Positive Coaching Alliance at Stanford University.
- I do a lot of public speaking. I have spoken about Until It Hurts in Philadelphia, New Jersey, Seattle, Austin, New York and at a Little League Day at the Oakland Coliseum a few hours before an Athletics game. I’ve also appeared on panels and led workshops for the Sports Lawyers Association, the American Press Institute and the Associated Press Sports Editors.
- I enjoy teaching. In 2009 and 2010, I was an adjunct professor at both the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and McDaniel College.
- My current sports passion is running — I’ve completed marathons in 16 states, on my way to a goal to complete marathons in 50 states. I train with my pals from the Baltimore Pacemakers.
- I am a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Maryland School of Law. I am a member of the Maryland Bar.
- My greatest pleasure is spending time with my wife, Peggy Brennecke and hanging out with our children (my toughest editors) Eli and Ben.
